Bio

Brenda Kobs Russell is a Michigan based artist whose work is evidence of an ongoing investigation connecting her inner life to natural phenomena. She employs an abstract vocabulary, continuously evolving and rearranging shapes to show natural forces at work. Her one-of-a-kind and limited edition prints are often richly layered through combinations of etching, collagraph, and woodblock, with frequent extensions into collage, painting, or embroidery.

Russell is a seasoned art educator having taught students across a wide range of age and ability in private schools, art centers, and as a lecturer on the faculties of Oakland University and Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, University of Michigan. She earned her B.F.A. at Michigan State University (1983) followed by her M.F.A. at Cranbrook Academy of Art (1985). Russell works from a home studio where she has adapted traditional print practices to safer, non-toxic alternatives.
